Many of our residents know the joys of pet ownership. However, pet owners need to be aware of the responsibilities and restrictions involved in owning animals. Each South Australian council has developed an Animal Management Plan. Our city’s plan concentrates on dogs, cats and poultry.

Dogs must be registered and the number of dogs allowed on domestic premises is restricted. Cats do not need to be registered but we urge cat owners to identify their cat through microchipping and a collar for the cat stating the owner’s details. Residents may keep poultry in limited numbers as long as they do not have an adverse impact on neighbours. The council also provides guidelines for the keeping of horses.

Penalties apply for breaching animal regulations.

The council also provides guidance on dealing with pests and vermin (including mosquitoes, European wasps, rats and flies) as well as the treatment of possums and the required permits for their capture.
